You Kitamura is a New York-based photographer. He typically works strictly with traditional black and white films, though on the equipment side of things, he spends time with everything from a 35mm Leica to a massive antique view camera.
After he studied industrial design at college, he spent almost two years traveling the world before moving to London. It was during these periods that his interest in photography deepened dramatically.
His main subjects are human: from the implicit beauty of their ordinary lives captured in unguarded moments, to the dignity of individual portraiture in its attempt to capture their floating emotions and environments that sustains and surrounds them.
He limits his technique to traditional films because he strongly believes that a carefully printed darkroom picture is still the most beautiful form of photography—even in this digital age.
This method also allows him to be intimately involved with and responsible for all stages in the process of producing an image, from the photography itself to the development of the film and the final printing in his darkroom. He spent years learning about each of these processes in depth so that he might apply his own aesthetic to every stage in the production of the final image.
Many of his works represent a tender humanism. He hopes that, through them, the viewer rediscovers their own intangible sympathies.
